Turn short public messages into the correct action by combining wording, symbols and context.
Find the instruction word
Look for verbs such as keep, use, wait, report, close or do not enter. They tell you the expected action.
Notice restrictions
Words such as only, except, before, after and until change who the notice applies to and when.

Use symbols as support
A symbol can reinforce the message, but read the words when they are present. Similar icons may have different meanings in different places.
Restate the message
Before choosing an answer, say the notice in simple language: who, what action, where and when.
