Everyday texts

Read messages, emails and short letters

Identify sender, recipient, reason, time and requested response in everyday communication.

Map the people first

Identify who wrote the message and who receives it. Pronouns and requests make more sense once the roles are clear.

Find the reason

A message may apologise, change a plan, request information, complain or confirm an arrangement. The reason connects the details.

Build a small time line

Write down the date of the message, the event date and any deadline separately. Words such as tomorrow depend on the message date.

Choose the required response

Look for questions, imperatives and contact instructions. The correct response should answer what the sender actually needs.
