How to prepare for questions without scripting every answer
Use attentive listening, clarification and evidence to respond clearly when the next question is unexpected.

Listen to the whole question
Wait for the speaker to finish, then identify what is being asked: a fact, a reason, a comparison or a challenge. A short pause can prevent a prepared answer from missing the actual question.
Clarify uncertain wording
If a question is ambiguous, check the intended meaning before responding. Clarification is more useful than confidently answering a different question, especially when two terms could be interpreted in different ways.
Answer, support and qualify
Start with the direct answer, add the most relevant reason or example, and identify any uncertainty. It is acceptable to distinguish what your research establishes from what would need further investigation.
Practise asking useful questions too
After listening to another learner, ask about a claim, implication or alternative interpretation that was genuinely raised. Avoid using a question mainly as an opportunity to give another speech.
