How to prepare a news item for discussion

Choose a substantive article and distinguish its reporting, evidence, framing and unresolved questions.

Official sources checked: 2026-10-23

Select a discussion, not only a headline

Look for an issue with competing interpretations and enough evidence to support an informed conversation. Ensure the group can understand the context without already knowing every person or event mentioned.

Summarise before evaluating

First explain what the article reports and which issue it raises. Then distinguish the article's language and framing from your own view. A concise factual summary gives the group a shared starting point.

Look for missing context

Compare key claims with their original source where possible. Ask whose perspective appears, whose is absent and whether a statistic is being compared fairly. Avoid calling every disagreement bias.

Prepare open questions

Write questions that invite reasons and alternatives rather than a yes or no answer. Keep a backup prompt for silence and another for bringing a discussion back to the central issue.
