How to lead a balanced group discussion
Practise inviting contributions, developing responses and closing with a faithful summary of the group's views.

Open with a shared question
State the issue and give the group enough context to respond. Offer your own position without presenting it as the only reasonable conclusion, and signal that alternative explanations are welcome.
Follow answers rather than your prompt list
Listen for a reason that needs testing or an assumption that needs clarification. A relevant follow-up usually develops the discussion better than moving immediately to the next prepared question.
Manage participation respectfully
Invite quieter members without putting them under pressure. If one person dominates, acknowledge the contribution and ask for another perspective. The aim is a useful exchange, not a contest to speak most often.
Summarise what was actually said
In the closing summary, identify common ground, meaningful disagreement and any change in your own thinking. Do not attribute a view to the group simply because it supports your original argument.
