How to build a literary recommendation

Move beyond plot summary to explain why a chosen text matters and how its writing supports your judgement.

Choose a text you can discuss critically

Select a work whose style and effect you can explain using specific evidence. Personal enthusiasm helps, but the recommendation needs reasons that another reader can understand and evaluate.

Give only the context the audience needs

Introduce the writer, form and relevant setting without spending the whole recommendation retelling events. Connect contextual information to an actual feature of the text rather than listing background facts.

Support evaluation with a short passage

Identify a choice of image, voice, structure or language and explain its effect. State why that effect strengthens or limits your recommendation. A balanced judgement can recognise weaknesses without losing a clear position.

Prepare the reading as a separate task

Mark the sense and changes of thought in the selected passage, then read it aloud for meaning. The current specification permits reading; do not rely on older advice that presents memorisation as a requirement.
