Reading skill

Separate the main idea from supporting detail

Summarise what a short text is mainly about, then locate the exact evidence for detailed questions.

Use repeated meaning

The main idea often appears through several related sentences, not one repeated phrase. Ask what all the details have in common.

Keep the summary broad but accurate

A main-idea answer should cover most of the text without adding information or becoming so general that it could fit any passage.

Return for detail

For names, times, places, prices or reasons, scan for the relevant word or synonym and read the complete sentence around it.

Do not swap examples for purpose

One memorable example may support the text but is not necessarily what the whole text is about.
