Assessment

How the four-task reading assessment works

Use the current sample assessor guidance to plan one hour without inventing a fixed question count.

Four tasks, one hour

Gateway's current sample assessor pack contains four reading tasks with one hour allocated in total. Each task has a guide time of 15 minutes.

Supervised and controlled

Tasks are completed under supervision. They may be completed together or at different times, but learners cannot take assessment material away to finish elsewhere.

All tasks are required

Candidates must complete all four tasks and may do them in any order. If one task runs over its guide time, less time remains for later work.

Do not memorise a question total

Sample materials can change and centres may use approved contextualisation. Train the published reading outcomes and task control rather than expecting one permanent number or layout.
